Home-Mory

Artist: Vanessa Howe Xin Yu

Description: Home-mory is an installation art piece inspired by the designer’s grandmother, built with the intention to remind people, as sons and daughters, that their parents are always home waiting for them. While achieving dreams and studying is important, life is unpredictable — we never know what could happen tomorrow. Often, what parents and grandparents truly want is not wealth but instead quality time spent with their children and grandchildren. The designer uses the concept of a video depicting common life experiences and memories of growing up intercut with an intimate interview of their grandmother about the subject matter in order to emotionally impact the audience and nudge them to reflect on their own life and relationships with their families back home. The audio will be played through a vintage phone to bring the audience back in time and let them feel as if they are really having a conversation with their parents/grandparents.

“At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, a parent.” - Barbara Bush
